I wrote “I Got My Music” during January and February of 2026. The song is about the music scene on Broadway here in Nashville and my experience when I first started auditioning as a drummer at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

After the audition, I thought, “This would be such a cool song.” The idea ended up hovering around in my brain for about three weeks.

Then the snowstorm hit Nashville, and everything shut down for days. On the last day of the winter storm, I went up to my room and played a little keyboard riff. That became the opening hook to the song.

I took that basic idea and turned it into simple chords for a verse and chorus, then started singing lyrics over it. About 30 minutes later, I had the completed song.

To be clear, the recording process took months. I played every instrument, engineered most of the parts myself, and mixed and mastered it until my brain became fuzzy. Some songs ask for more, and oh boy, was this one of them. Almost every part was re-recorded at least twice, aside from the drums, which we knocked out in a clean eight takes.

I enjoy it when people share the behind-the-scenes stories of a project, so I wanted to share a little bit of mine with you.
